America’s Top 100 Employers for 2008

148-rfifr.jpg

I’m sure everyone will love to hear this news. Fortune magazine has already released the top 100 companies to work for in 2008 and guess what, Google ranks no. 1 again just like last year.

Google was followed by Quicken Loans at the second spot, Wegmans Food Markets at third, Edward Jones at fourth and Genentech at fifth. Google posted a job growth of 60 percent and I think this is enough proof of its growing presence in the market and stability as a company.

Apparently, Google remains on top because it never fails to make employees happy by allowing them to try new things. Pay and perks asides, Google is also innovative as it continues to develop new products and services. I think this is what makes it a desirable employer.

Here’s the link to the complete list from CNNMoney.com.

Make Your Job Search a Full-Time Job

144-supanetcom.jpg

In this time of economic downturns, finding employment has never been tougher and exhausting. For job seekers, it translates to the need to put more efforts into the job search. Based on personal experience and the experiences of my friends and the people I’ve worked with in the past, finding a job entails total dedication.

I suggest you make your job search a full-time job. You should not waste time searching for the “best” resume format or the “most effective” cover letter. There exist no such things. Instead, use the Internet in sending job applications to prospective employers and connecting to your professional contacts. Remember that you are just one among millions that are looking for a job, so make sure you manage your time wisely.

Job Aggregators

145-anewjobcom.jpg

Most online job sites serve one primary purpose and that is to provide job listings to job seekers. These job listings are like gates to employment, it’s up to the job seeker to pursue it directly or jump to a better-looking opportunity.

While most job sites connect job seekers to jobs, others do more. They narrow the search for job seekers by collecting job postings from reliable sources and aggregating them into one database. They are called job aggregators.

Job sites that are job aggregators prove to be more effective than their other counterparts because they come from different sources and are not time-consuming. Here’s a more comprehensive discussion on job aggregators from Job-Hunt.org to guide you in making the best out of job sites.

Right after college, you automatically become a member of an alumni association. Known for their worthy endeavors that serve to benefit the alma mater and the community in general, alumni organizations boast of a pool of professionals that are mostly successful in their respective fields.

You may be wondering right now where this topic is going, I better get to the point or run the risk of losing my readers. I am discussing alumni associations to advise job seekers to use their alumni association in locating jobs.

I suggest you take your networking skills to the next level by being an active member of your alumni association. It’s definitely a sure way to get employment leads, career advice and industry updates that could give a much-needed boost to your job search.

Job Search Tips for the Employed (Part 2)

142-freegovernmentmoneyus.jpg

This concludes my previous post on job search tips for the employed. Here are some stealthy yet effective job search tips to point you in the right direction:

1. Never do your job search at work. Doing it at work is impolite and the chance that your officemates may know about it is high. You may do your job search at home or outside the workplace.
2. If given a chance, schedule your job interview during lunch breaks. Just so your work won’t get compromised and you get to have more time to prepare for the job interview.
3. Use online job search tools. This will facilitate your job search more than you could ever imagine. Online job search tools include visiting job sites and employer websites, joining online networks, subscribing to job alerts offered by job sites, among others.
